I got to go to a get together at Mukka restaurant situated on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy. The first thing that struck me when I entered the place was their interior. There were beautiful paintings on the walls, flowers hanging on the walls and small elements that represented the culture of Indian food. I was really impressed with the interior of this place.
You can smell the fragrance of Indian spices as you enter the restaurant. I liked the menu that they have created, they managed to add a lot of variety into the menu without making it a very big menu that confuses you. We were 7 people and ordered a lot of food and I got a pretty good idea about the food that they have to offer at Mukka, which I’ll share with you.
We ordered everything from their Tandoori street grills which included Chicken Tikka, Spicy lamb chops, Paneer Tikka and Tandoori Mushroom. All of the Starters were impressive. The chicken and Lamb were cooked nicely in the tandoor. The flavor was very nice as well, but the flavor of Paneer Tikka and Tandoori mushroom was much more striking than that of the non-vegetarian options. I would recommend you to try the vegetarian options while you are there for starters.
Now for the main course. While ordering we were warned that the Naan is really big so order accordingly. When it was served it was bigger than what I had expected even after being warned. Half of the Naan was bigger than the plate that I was putting it in so you can use your imagination to measure the size of that Naan. The curries that I ordered were Daal Makhani, Palak Paneer, Butter chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala. To be honest I was disappointed with the curries that were served. All of the curries had one thing in common that they were bland. All of them needed salt to bring out the flavor of the dish. The chicken in the dishes was cooked nicely but better seasoning could have made them really good.
I think I would give this place another go and would recommend this place to someone who wants to enjoy good starters. But I think they need to work more on perfecting their Main course menu.
